What is a Coach?
When you think of a coach, you probably imagine the athletic kind, whether that’s a high school gym teacher or the coach of a professional sports team. Life coaches are similar in some ways — their job is to get the best out of their team (in this case: you) and their goal is to inspire traits and teach skills necessary for success. Where an athletic coach focuses on things like physical strength, endurance, and perseverance, a life coach’s domain is confidence, responsibility, organization and personal satisfaction.
A coach is a guide, someone who’s been where you are and has developed effective strategies for dealing with all the hurdles life can throw at you. But more than that, a coach is someone who knows how to listen, to understand, and to support.
In our busy and hectic modern age, the art of listening is becoming an ever-rarer quality. We all hear each other, of course, but many of us simply don’t have the time or energy to do more than that. Coaches have made it their goal in life to listen — unjaded and unbiased; not simply waiting for their turn to speak, but with curiosity, compassion, and genuine interest in what you have to say. Your coach’s job is to see the breadth and depth of your situation so that she can guide you through it from a higher vantage point than you’d be able to gain on your own. In order to achieve such a bird’s-eye view of the maze of your life, she needs to know you; to know you, she needs to be able to absorb everything you have to say and to be able to understand the meaning in the things you don’t say.
